SAN DIEGO (AP) — Crews were searching for a Marine Corps helicopter carrying five troops from Nevada to California that was reported overdue early Wednesday, officials said. The Marines were flying a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter from Creech Air Force Base in Clark County, Nevada, to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, the Marine Corps said in a statement. The five U.S. Marines were assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Miramar. The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing based at Miramar Air Station in San Diego is coordinating search and rescue efforts with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the Civil Air Patrol, the Marine Corps said. Ukraine destroyed a Russian air-defense system worth $1.2 billion, reports said Thursday. The S-400 "Triumf" was taken down using a combination of Neptune missiles and drones, reports said. The advanced S-400 "Triumf" air-defense system was destroyed in a joint operation by Kyiv's security service (SBU) and navy, the BBC and Reuters reported, citing Ukrainian intelligence sources. It wrote that before its attack, Ukraine sent out drones to strike a Russian ship in the Black Sea. The air-defense system fired its rounds to shoot the drones down, thus revealing its location, Rybar reported.

Illinois' Pretrial Fairness Act, which abolishes cash bail as a condition of pretrial release, will take effect Sept. 18, making Illinois the first state to end cash bail and a testing ground for whether — and how — it works on a large scale. Critics say cash bail policies are especially unfair to Black people and other people of color. In 2017, New Jersey essentially replaced its cash bail system with a risk assessment process that gauged the potential danger a released defendant could pose to the community. But cash bail is still allowed in some instances in that state and others that have curtailed the practice, such as New York and Alaska. California has made several efforts to reform its cash bail system, but lawmakers balked at sweeping reform.

Asked about the new combination, which is part of a deeper Defence & Space restructuring codenamed ATOM, an Airbus spokesperson said: "We are currently discussing the details and ideas with our social partners". In July, Airbus Chief Executive Guillaume Faury said a reorganisation in Defence & Space was designed to make the business more agile. Further upside could be in sight for defense contractor AeroVironment amid a rise in demand, according to Baird. Analyst Peter Arment upgraded the stock to outperform, in addition to raising its price target to $128 from $95. The new price target suggests shares could rally more than 34% from Tuesday's close. AeroVironment is a "leader in small [unmanned air system] UAS contracts," Arment wrote in a Wednesday note. He noted the U.S. Army is set to award a new multiyear contract for AeroVironment's small UAS systems, which will support a broad range of the company's product base.

CNN —A US military F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet crashed late Thursday near San Diego, according to a statement from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, the Marines said Friday in a statement. The crash site is on US government property in the vicinity of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, “and there are no indications of damage to property on the ground,” the Marines said. An investigation into the crash has begun, according to the Marines. The F/A-18 Hornet is the nation’s first all-weather fighter and attack aircraft, and is considered “the workhorse of Marine Corps tactical aviation,” according to Naval Air Systems Command.
